National Safety Month: Prepare for car trouble

On Behalf of | Jun 12, 2018 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

“One can never be too prepared.” This saying is true for numerous situations, especially when it comes to emergencies. During June, Ohio residents may consider several safety topics and make plans as to how they will avoid problems or deal with them if troubles arise.

The National Safety Council has designated June as National Safety Month. Each week focuses on a different safety topic. Emergency preparedness takes the spotlight during the first week of June.

Since motor vehicle accidents present a major injury and fatality risk for motorists across the country, there is no better time to focus on preparing for car accidents and for possible trouble. The Department of Homeland Security has provided numerous tips. Motorists should keep an emergency kit in their cars, which might include a first aid kit, jumper cables, emergency flares, a flashlight, blankets and bottled water. Although it is summer, it is also a good idea to include an ice scraper, so car owners are not caught off guard when the weather changes in the fall. It is also wise to have a cellphone charger in the car and to keep the gas tank full. Before a trip, it is recommended to get the engine serviced and make sure tires and brakes are in good repair.

When drivers’ vehicles are stocked for an emergency, it could make it easier to deal with the aftermath of an accident or help families cope when their vehicle is disabled and they are waiting for help to arrive.
